Vinalhaven has an area of commercial and residential buildings a few blocks deep (or
less) around Carver's Harbor centered around the ferry
dock and the fishing fleet.
Note: The island looks less populous than it actually was because I
was trying NOT to take
photos of people. I thought it would make them nervous.

There is one main street with hometown USA type storefronts.
There is a toy store, a grocery store, a
restaurant, a couple of gift shops, a real estate agency,
a post office, you'll have to visit to see the
rest. This street is immediately adjacent to the harbor.

This is the hotel. It sits across the street from the buildings in the above picture.

The yellow building on the left is the post office.

Here is the restaurant. During the summer there were a couple of other take-out restaurants as well. Those
are pictured later on this page.

There is more to downtown than I got to explore. Up on the left is a video rental store with snacks.

Here is what looks to be a condo complex just behind (away from the harbor)
the main street and to the left.

|
|
I shot this next set of photos immediately behind the main street
but more to the right.
This area includes the library, a church, a gazebo, a monument, and a
very nice looking neighborhood.
Note the monument in the park past the intersection.

Here's a closeup on the monument.

This is the public library.
|
|
|
Across the street from the library is this exhibit and gazebo.

|
|
Here is the church. I believe it's a Congregationalist church.

Looking down the road past the church:

These are the two take-out establishments near the harbor when I was visiting in July 2000.
The food was slightly better than the atmosphere of each establishment. When the ferry arrives
around lunch time all of the eating establishments are rather busy.
